The President, National Executive Council, and members of the Association of Telecommunications Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) have congratulated Dr. Karl Olutokun Toriola, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, on his recent conferment of an Honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) in Engineering by Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), lle-Ife, Nigeria.

ATCON, which expressed its warmest congratulations to the MTN Nigeria CEO in a statement via its verified social media account noted that “his prestigious honour is a testament to Dr. Toriola’s outstanding contributions to the telecommunications industry and his commitment to excellence.â€

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports HRH Alhaji (Dr.) Yahaya Abubakar (The Etsu Nupe), Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, conferred the Honorary Doctorate Degree on Toriola Saturday, December 14, 2024, during the University’s 48th Convocation Ceremonies, held on campus, in Ile-Ife.

Mr. Tony Izuagbe Emoekpere, President of ATCON, also stated: “As the CEO of MTN Nigeria, Dr. Toriola has played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s telecommunications landscape.

“Once again, please accept our heartfelt congratulations on this well-deserved achievement.

“We wish you continued success and excellence in your future endeavours.â€

Dr. Toriola a ‘leader who inspires,’ says MTN

Also congratulating Dr. Toriola on latest honour from OAU, MTN Nigeria, December 14, equally described the Chief Executive of the leading telecoms firm in the country as “a leader who inspires, a recognition well-deserved!â€

The Telco stated: “Congratulations, Dr. Karl Olutokun Toriola, on receiving the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science (D.Sc.) in Engineering (Honoris Causa) from Obafemi Awolowo University.

Other Honorary Doctoral Degree recipients at the 48th OAU Convocation Ceremonies, include Dr. Akinade Ogunbiyi, Prof. Olusegun Adegbulugbe, Dr. Karl Olutokun Toriola, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of MTN Nigeria Communications Plc, and Dr. Daere Akobo.

In regard to his contributions to the development of the Nigerian society, Dr. Toriola’s recognition reflects his remarkable journey as a business leader, a report said

It is also noted that under his leadership, MTN Nigeria has solidified its position as a telecommunications powerhouse, “boasting the largest subscriber base of over 78 million, fostering innovation, expanding connectivity, and driving socio-economic growth.â€

His leadership as well has steered MTN’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, which have significantly impacted education, health, and youth empowerment across Nigeria with over NGN30 million in investment in Nigerian communities, according to report.

Prof. Bamire, VC: How OAU honours Nigerians of exceptional integrity

Speaking on the University’s 48th Convocation Ceremonies at a press conference earlier December 2024, Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire, Vice-Chancellor of Obafemi Awolowo University, had said the authorities of the academic institution announced a total of 7,368 students that would graduate at the events scheduled for December 12-14 this year.

Prof. Bamire also disclosed that “on the third day, Saturday, December 14, 2024, we will honour distinguished Nigerians of exceptional integrity by conferring Honorary Doctorate Degrees (PhD, Honoris Causa) across various academic departments of our university.â€

The graduating students, representing 13 Faculties, include 215 First Class Honours, 2,197 Second Class Upper Division, and 2,691 Second Class Lower Division, the Vice-Chancellor stated.
