In view of the emerging concerns the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) could turn into a seasonal malady, one that needs annual protections, some healthcare professionals are currently considering the need for booster COVID-19 shots.

The advice was given by health officials in the United States (US) and the European Union (EU), who are increasingly concerned that the virus could turn into a seasonal malady, one that needs annual protections 鈹� just like the flu, agency report stated.

Fauci, who is Director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, in the US, said a booster COVID-19 Vaccine may be needed as early as this fall for those who got vaccinated early on.

It was gathered that most scientists are still on the fence about the necessity of that but say they are keeping close tabs on the virus and how it mutates. Of special concern are the variants that might resist some of the immunity from the initial shots.

“We know that the vaccine durability of the efficacy lasts at least six months, and likely considerably more, but I think we will almost certainly require a booster sometime within a year or so after getting the primary,” Fauci said.

Albert Bourla, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Pfizer, has disclosed that his company has not yet finished its trials on a booster vaccine.

However, he noted that data from the trial should be publicly available in the next few months.

Bourla stated: “I believe in one, two months we will have enough data to speak about it with much higher scientific certainty.”

According to Fauci, vaccines specifically targeting different variants of the virus may not be needed if people keep getting booster doses against the 鈥渨ild type,鈥� or the non-mutated strain of the virus.

The scientist added: “Instead of having to play whack-a-mole with each individual variant and develop a booster that’s variant-specific, it is likely that you could just keep boosting against the wild type, and wind up getting a good enough response that you wouldn’t have to worry about the variants.鈥�

On why consumers may require yearly COVID-19 shots, experts now believe the disruptive Coronavirus could end up requiring seasonal mitigation efforts, similar to the flu.

The flu requires a new vaccination every year because it mutates and doesn鈥檛 provide protection for more than a year.

Pfizer Chief also said, for example, that people who received their second shot of his company鈥檚 Coronavirus vaccine brand at the end of 2020 may need a booster by this fall.

He said: “If they got their second shot eight months ago, they may need a third one.

鈥淏ooster shots could be coming between September and October of this year. But it鈥檚 ultimately up to the FDA to decide what to recommend and approve.鈥�
