Against the backdrop of apparent lean economic resources competing for the ever-increasing number of tertiary institutions in recent times, President Muhammadu Buhari has said the Nigerian Government cannot afford the funding needed to resuscitate the wobbly educational system in in the country.

It was gathered President Buhari stated this in his address Saturday, June 12, 2021, at the 49th Convocation ceremony of the University of Nigeria Nsukka (UNN).

Buhari, represented at the ceremony by Emeka Nwajiuba, Honourable Minister of State for Education, disclosed the financial situation in the country has been worsened by the global economic downturn, which by implication, has affected the national revenue.

The competition for funds has become keener because of the recent increase in the number of tertiary institutions in the country, said he.

However, the President noted that his administration is committed to addressing the needs of tertiary institutions through budgetary allocations to the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFUND).

Buhari said: 鈥淚 am optimistic that the on-going drive to diversify the national economy will provide the government with additional resources to improve funding for the education system.鈥�

According to him, the universities should also leverage other funding sources, such as from alumni, friends, the private sector, institutional linkages, and research grants, to attract additional revenue for infrastructure, research and development.

鈥淲e must also address the problems of poor work ethics and the albatross of prolonged and recurrent industrial actions by staff of universities,鈥� the President stressed.

He as well urged academic institutions across the country to activate the kind of innovative research that could help to boost production and diversify the economy.

Buhari added: 鈥淥ur universities must continue to emphasise training in entrepreneurship, so school leavers and graduates are able to become job creators instead of perennial job seekers.鈥�
