As part of the regulatory agency鈥檚 continued onslaught against drug trafficking and illegal substance abuse in Nigeria, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has intercepted 550grammes of cannabis and 50 grammes of Rohypnol (Flunitrazepam) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), in Ikeja, Lagos.

Mr. Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy of the NDLEA, in a statement issued Sunday, July 11, 2021, in Abuja, FCT, said that the drugs concealed in six jerry cans of local herbal mixtures called 鈥楪abo鈥� were confiscated at the export shed of Skyway Aviation Handling Company Plc.

The statement noted the drugs were detected during outward clearance of cargo going to Dubai.

The NDLEA stated that its operatives also arrested Mr. Babatunde Bakare alongside the prohibited items in Lagos.

Babafemi said that operatives of the Command also intercepted a 4.3 kilogrammes of skunk imported from Canada.

According to him, the package which came into the country via the Ethiopian Airlines was concealed in nine packs of cereals.

He related that the operatives of the MMIA Command July 6 conducted a follow-up operation at Gate 2, Ladipo Oluwole Street, opposite Guinness Bottling Company, Ikeja.

The agency鈥檚 Director of Media and Advocacy also stressed operatives arrested certain Animashaun Kabiru for questioning over a bag containing bitter cola, which was brought for export to the United Kingdom (UK).

The statement said: 鈥淲hen the bag of bitter kola was searched, it was discovered that the bitter kola was mixed with some wraps of a substance suspected to be illicit drug.

鈥淎 total of 36 wraps of the suspected substance later tested positive for cocaine weighing 600 grammes.鈥�

An Uber driver, Mr. Lawal Rasheed, who was arrested June 8 in connection with the seizure of a cocaine consignment, had been let off the hook, he stated.

According to Babafemi, Rasheed鈥檚 release followed his cooperation that led to the arrest of the real owner of the drug, Mr. Egbo Maduka.

The statement noted that Maduka, in his statement, accepted ownership of the consignment and absolved Rasheed of any complicity in the process.

Babafemi also quoted Brig.-Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd.), Chairman of NDLEA, as commending the officers and men of the MMIA Command of the agency for the series of seizures and arrests in the past weeks.

While urging the personnel not to rest on their oars, Marwa said: 鈥淲e must all remain fully prepared and proactive at all times, if we have to battle this scourge to a standstill.鈥�
