In a strategic move to further enhance sufficiency and save more patients in the tertiary health institution, the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) has disclosed that it will soon inaugurate its Endoscopy Suite and an Oxygen Plant to enhance sufficiency and save more patients.

绿帽献妻 reports Prof. Adetokunbo Fabamwo, Chief Medical Director (CMD) of LASUTH, stated this development at a media briefing Thursday, July 22, 2021, in Lagos.

Endoscopy Suite

An endoscopy unit, according to Wikipedia, refers to 鈥渁 dedicated area where medical procedures are performed with endoscopes, which are cameras used to visualise structures within the body, such as the digestive tract and genitourinary system.鈥�

They may be located within a hospital, incorporated within other medical care centres, or may be stand-alone in nature.

The LASUTH CMD said that both projects to be activated August this year would be a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) venture.

Prof. Fabamwo explained that the Endoscopy Suit would have eight renal dialysis units, a cardiac catheterisation laboratory and private rooms to cater for the patients.

Cardiac catheterisation laboratory is a special hospital room where a doctor performs minimally invasive tests and procedures to diagnose and treat cardiovascular diseases.

According to him, LASUTH would be the first public health facility and the third hospital to have a cardiac catheterisation unit in Lagos.

He noted that some patients died because they did not get immediate intervention, while some others died from pulmonary embolism, heart attack and hemorrhagic stroke.

The three conditions are major causes of sudden deaths among the populace, the LASUTH CMD said.

Fabamwo stated: 鈥淧ulmonary embolism is when one or more arteries in the lung becomes blocked by blood clot, usually such a patient has short time to survive.

鈥淲e have interventional cardiologists who can conduct procedures to remove the clot in pulmonary embolism patients and even, myocardial infarction patients.鈥�

He added: 鈥淓ven, before setting up this our laboratory, our interventional cardiologists have been performing these heroic acts in the past, though it was under a less than ideal condition.

鈥淗aving these laboratories would save more lives and make life easier for all involved.鈥�

In respect of the Oxygen plant, Prof. Fabamwo said that it would produce 200 bottles of Oxygen daily, while the hospital requires 70 bottles daily for its usage.

According to him, the excess Oxygen will be sold by the PPP company to generate fund.

He said that the hospital spent about N8million monthly in providing Oxygen for its patients.

The plant would assist to reduce the hospital鈥檚 expenditure, Fabamwo said.
