The West African Examinations Council (WAEC), Nigeria National Office has announced Monday, August 16, 2021, for the commencement of 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) for school candidates.

The WAEC Nigeria National Office, however, has disclosed that with effect from the 2022 WASSCE for school candidates and subsequent diets, any candidate without the mandatory National Identification Number (NIN) would not be allowed to sit examinations.

ñ gathered Mr. Patrick Areghan, Head of Nigeria National Office, announced this development Tuesday, August 10, 2021, in the Yaba office of the regional examination body, in Lagos.

Areghan said: “In accordance with the Final International Timetable, the WASCCE (SC) 2021 will take place throughout the sub-region from Monday, 16th August to Friday, 8th October 2021.

“However, the examination will end in Nigeria on September 30, 2021 – spanning a period of seven weeks.”

In respect of statistics for the 2021 diet of the school-based examinations, he stated that “19,425 recognised secondary schools, comprising 8,052 public and 11,373 private schools spread across the nooks and crannies of the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, would be presenting a total of 1,573,789 candidates comprising 792,620 males (50.367%) and 781,169 females (49.647%) for the examination candidates would be examined in 76 subjects, made up of 197 papers.”

He said about 25,000 senior teachers would be participating in the conduct of the examinations as supervisors.

According to him, the examinations suffered postponement again, till August against May/June due to COVID-19 pandemic.

The final new timetable was drawn to cater for the interests of all the five-member countries.

WAEC Head of Nigeria National Office also pooh-poohed certain rumours of live examination question papers, and tasked all stakeholders to ensure that the examinations are conducted under strict and prescribed COVID-19 protocols.

He explained: “On the issue of security/insecurity, we are liaising with the relevant security agencies as this is purely within their purview.

“Moreover, we are trusting God, as usual, for His divine intervention.

“Let me use this opportunity to warn all schools, candidates, supervisors, invigilators, principals and proprietors of schools, and indeed, all examination functionaries, to desist from all acts of examination malpractice.

“All rogue website operators are hereby seriously warned to desist from their nefarious acts.”

He noted that the use of the National Identification Number would become a major requirement for registration for the WASSCE examinations with effect from the WASSCE for school candidates in 2022 and subsequent diets.

“No NIN, no entry,” said he.

Areghan added: “This means that all prospective candidates must register with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) and get their National Identification Number (NIN).

“This is in line with the Federal Government’s policy, as directed by the Federal Ministry of Education.”
