Lagos Governor appoints Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello new VC of LASU

*Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello’s appointment as the Vice-Chancellor of Lagos State University was recommended by the Joint Committee of the Council and Senate of the Lagos State University alongside two other candidates, says Lagos State Government

Following several months of selection crises in the state-owned academic institution, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State has Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, a Professor of Medicine, as the ninth substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo.

Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, Honourable Commissioner for Information and Strategy, in Lagos State, confirmed Prof. (Mrs.) Olatunji-Bello’s appointment in a statement issued Wednesday, September 15, 2021, in Lagos.

The tenure of the 8th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Olanrewaju Adigun Fagbohun, lapsed January 11, 2021.

The Commissioner stated the new Vice-Chancellor, who is the wife of Mr. Olatunji Bello, Honourable Commissioner for Environment, in Lagos State, was appointed following a recommendation by the Joint Committee of Council and Senate of LASU in accordance with the LASU Law, Cap 169 Vol 7, Laws of Lagos State.

The statement noted that she was recommended for the position alongside two other candidates, Prof. Omotayo Awofolu and Prof. Senapon Bakare, who took the second and third positions in ranking respectively.

Prof. Tunji- Bello assumed duty as the first Professor of Physiology in the LASU College of Medicine October 2, 2007, after rising from the ranks as Assistant Lecturer (1988 to 1991) to Associate Professor in 2005 at the College of Medicine, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Idi-Araba.

Prof. Olatunji-Bello, in 2012, attended Course 34 of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), in Kuru, near Jos, as a nominee of the National Universities Commission (NUC) in the institution regarded as the highest policy advisory body of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

Olatunji-Bello, a member of the National Institute (mni), also holds a Fellowship Award of the Physiological Society of Nigeria, and was appointed a Fellow of the Environmental Toxicology and Pollution Mitigation in 2019.
