Ikoyi building collapse: Sanwo-Olu, Tinubu, Sule condole with victims’ families as Lagos begins ‘controlled demolition’ on site

*Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State discloses the rescue workers have recovered 44 bodies from the rubble of the Ikoyi building collapse with 15 survivors, as the search for the victims gradually inches to an end

Sympathising with the family members of the victims of the building collapse, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, ex-Governor of Lagos State, and Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State have joined Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State to the scene of Ikoyi building collapse in the cosmopolitan state of Nigeria.

ñ gathered during the visit to the scene Saturday, November 6, 2021, while empathising with the  family members of the victims of the building collapse, Governor Sanwo-Olu gave an update on the search and rescue operation at the scene.

Earlier, the rescue workers at the 21-story collapsed building had recovered bodies of Mr. Femi Osibona, Managing Director of Fourscore Heights Limited, owners of the building; and his friend, Mr. wale Bob-Oseni, a United States-based Nigerian businessman together with Oyinye Enekwe, his Personal Assistant, and clients, among over 50 persons said to be in the crashed structure.

The Lagos State Governor disclosed that six additional people were evacuated alive from the collapsed structure, and are currently being treated at the Police Hospital at Falomo, in Ikoyi.

Sanwo-Olu disclosed that 42 bodies had been recovered from the site as of 6:00 p.m. Saturday, giving a clearer manifest of the number of people that were possibly at the construction site before the building caved in Monday, November 1.

However, it was learnt the workers rescued two more bodies from the rubble Sunday, November 7, increasing the death roll to 44.

Among the latest survivors of the building collapse are Glory Samson, a 38-year-old woman; Ndajor Ahmed, Yunusa Abubaka, Ajiboye Habib, Jeremiah Samson, and certain man identified as Emem.

Meanwhile, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has commenced a ‘controlled demolition’ at the site of the collapsed building in Ikoyi.

Workers of the agency ripped the estate entrance structure apart with an excavator Sunday afternoon.

The exercise was said to be part of their emergency operation at the scene of the incident which has claimed 42 lives thus far, Channels TV report said.

The two other towers beside the 21-story skyscraper that collapsed last Monday were reportedly left untouched, as government agencies continue to clear the rubble at the site.

However, Governor Sanwo-Olu has hinted at subjecting the two other high structures to “ageing analysis”.
