As the anti-narcotics regulatory agency continues investigations into the illicit transnational drug business, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has stated that there is no sacred cow regarding any of its officers indicted by the Nigeria Police authorities.

ñ reports the agency disclosed this stance, following the Police request Monday, February 14, 2022, asking the NDLEA to identify and deal with its officers allegedly involved in drug deal with Kyari.

Suspended Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Kyari was former Head of Intelligence Response Team (IRT) of the Nigeria Police Force.

IGP Usman Baba (l) and Suspended DCP Abba Kyari

The Police authorities had claimed some officials of the NDLEA at the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, were on the payroll of some international drug dealers.

The claim came shortly after NDLEA had declared the suspended DCP wanted for being the principal actor in a 25kg Cocaine deal.

Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer (FPRO), in a statement issued Monday said Usman Baba, Inspector-General of Police (IGP), had commenced probing of officers indicted in the matter.

Adejobi said: “In line with standard administrative procedures of the Force, the Inspector-General of Police has ordered a high-level, discreet and in-house investigation into the allegations.”

The drug dealers involved connived with NDLEA officials and asked the agency to investigate them, said the Nigeria Police.

Accordingly, Mr. Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy at NDLEA, has assured the Police that there will be no sacred cow in the agency’s ongoing investigation on Kyari’s drug deals.

Babafemi restated: “We did give an assurance in our statement on Monday that ‘no stone will be left unturned to ensure that all suspects already in custody and those that may still be indicted in the course of the investigation will face the full weight of the law at the end of the ongoing probe and that still stands.

“If anyone has concrete information or evidence, our doors are open.”

Police unaware of closure of units of IRT, STS ─Spokesman

Report indicates there has been confusion over a claim that IGP has ordered the closure of all satellite units of the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) and Special Tactical Squad (STS) units across the country.

The scrapping of the units was reportedly contained in viral ‘Police Wireless Message.’

It stated: “You are directed to shut down all command bases and collapse them to the headquarters with immediate effect.”

However, Adejobi debunked the claim, saying “I am not aware,” according to report.

Retired IGP Solomon Arase told The Guardian that if the scrapping of the satellite units is true, it is in tandem with the original Police plan.

“That’s in tandem with the original conceptualisation of the lRT.

“The lGP is only realigning to the intendment of the policy and curing the defects occasioned by strategic leadership that were operationally and tactically porous,” Arase said.
