UK Court remands Ike Ekweremadu, wife for ‘organ-harvesting charges’ till July

*The London Metropolitan (Met) Police have charged and remanded serving Nigerian Senator Ike Ekweremadu and his wife, Beatrice Nwanneka, with conspiracy to traffic a 15-year-old child to the country for organ harvesting

Sequel to investigation, the London Metropolitan (Met) Police, in the United Kingdom (UK), have charged serving Nigerian Senator and his wife, Beatrice Nwanneka, with conspiracy to traffic a “15-year-old boy” to the country for organ harvesting.

“They have both been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court later today,” said the Met.

The city’s law enforcement Thursday, June 23, 2022, said the charges preferred against the two accused persons by the Metropolitan Police’s Specialist Crime team also revealed some details about them, according to agency report.

Ekweremadu is a former President of the Nigerian Senate, and currently lawmaker representing Enugu in the National Assembly (NASS), Abuja, FCT.

The Met Police said the charges gave some details of the accused as follows: “(A) Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu, 55 (10.9.66) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

“(B) Ike Ekweremadu, 60 (12.05.62) of Nigeria is charged with conspiracy to arrange/facilitate travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.”

The UK law enforcement agency further noted: “The investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022.

“A child has been safeguarded, and we are working closely with partners on continued support.

“As criminal proceedings are now under way, we will not be providing further details.”

The Police said that the pieces of biographical data provided match the publicly available personal data of Ekweremadu as “a serving Senator and former Deputy Senate President”, and his wife.

When contacted for more information on the charges against Sen. Ekweremadu and wife, London Met stated, “as criminal proceedings are now underway we will not be providing further detail,” report said.

Though the Police did not state the gender of the child, they however, said, “A child has been safeguarded and we are working closely with partners on continued support.”

It was learnt the Metropolitan Police had arrainged the accused persons at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court, and they have been remanded till July 7, 2022.

Meanwhile, the Pandora Papers investigation as well revealed that the Nigerian Federal lawmaker is a UK resident, report noted.
