In its efforts at ridding Nigeria of prohibited drugs and substance abuse, the Imo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has revealed it seized 1,471kg of hard drugs in the South-East state between July 2021 and June 2022.

Reuben Apeh, NDLEA Commander in Imo  State, noted the anti-narcotics regulatory agency also arrested 218 drug suspects, 171 males and 47 females, during the period under review.

Apeh disclosed this development while speaking to reporters in Owerri, the state capital, as part of activities marking the year 2022 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking in the country.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports that June 26 of every year was set aside by the United Nations (UN) to create awareness on the dangers of illicit use of drugs.

The theme for the year 2022 is, ‘Addressing Drug Challenges in Health and Humanitarian Crises.’

Apeh said that the Command arraigned a total of 145 suspects, with 51 persons successfully convicted for drug-related offences.

According to him, the seized drugs include cannabis sativa, cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, tramadol, rohypnol and diazepam among others.

He also stated that 30 drug users were counselled, with nine already rehabilitated and reunited with their families.

The Commander noted: “The use of these substances has been greeted with gory stories of all kinds, ranging from violence, cultism, armed robbery to rape, creating an atmosphere of fear and insecurity in the state.

“The activities of drug peddlers in Imo has become alarming as they have become increasingly sophisticated among the younger persons in the state, including women and we must rise to the occasion, partner with the agency and reach out to residents of the state, with a view to discouraging youths and adults from drug abuse.â€

Apeh commended the Men and Officers of the Command for their resilience and pledged unrelenting commitment to the fight against drug abuse.
