FAAN shuts Lagos Airport runway till September 2022 to install Airfield Lighting

*The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria announces traffic will be diverted to the 18R/36L (international runway) for seamless operations by airlines during the period

As part of efforts at improving safety and efficiency in the country’s aviation sector, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has said the 18L/36R runway of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos, will be closed from Friday, July 8 till September 5, 2022.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports FAAN stated the closure of the runway would enable it to install the Airfield Lighting (AFL), which has been drowned for over a decade.

Mrs. Faithful Hope-Ivbase, Acting General Manager, Corporate Affairs of FAAN, in a statement noted the regulatory agency said during the period, traffic would be diverted to the 18R/36L (international runway) for seamless operations by airlines.

Hope-Ivbase also stated that Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) had already been published and disseminated accordingly.

The FAAN Corporates Affairs Chief said the regulator’s effort was geared towards improving safety and efficiency in the aviation sector of the economy.

“As part of efforts aimed at improving safety and efficiency of flight operations at the Murtala Muhammed Airport, Lagos, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has concluded arrangements to complete the installation of CAT III Airfield Ground Lighting system on Runway 18L/36R.

“The project will commence effectively on Friday, July 8, 2022, and is expected to last 90 days. Consequently, Runway 18L/36R will be closed to flight operations during this time,” stated Hope-Ivbase.

She further noted: “During the two-month-long closure, FAAN would be installing approach lights, runway lights ( threshold, centerline, edge lights … etc. So that runway 18L/ 36R returns to full 24/7 operations as soon as possible.â€

According to her, FAAN held a meeting with airline operators July 5, 2022, where the timeframe and modalities were communicated to them.

The Aeronautical Information Services of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) also noted that the DNMM would be closed from 0000-23000 08/07/2022 to 05/09/2022 to effect the repairs at Lagos Airport.
