The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has disclosed that nearly 90 million Nigerians have registered for the mandatory National Identification Number (NIN).

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ learnt Engr. Aliyu Aziz, Director-General/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of NIMC disclosed this development at an event to commemorate the fourth National Identity Day Friday, September 16, 2022, in Abuja, FCT.

The theme of this year’s event is: ‘Traditional Institution as Critical Stakeholders for Citizens Mobilisation’.

Engr. Aziz said: “Without sounding immodest, NIMC has made great strides on so many fronts in the last three years.

“From just over 1,000 enrolment centres and 2,000 enrolment devices across the country, NIMC in partnership with its licensed enrolment partners now has over 15,000 enrolment centres and over 29,000 enrolment devices deployed nationwide.”

The CEO of the national identity regulatory agency also stated: “This is one of the reasons enrolments have increased tremendously with over 89 million NINs generated successfully.

“On the international level, NIMC today has Diaspora enrolment centres in over 40 countries, with more centres and countries scheduled to be added in the coming months.â€

He further explained that with the development, Nigerians in the Diaspora would have the opportunity to enrol and have their national identities even while outside the shores of the country.

Aziz stated the more the government knows the accurate number of its population and the right demographics, the better it is placed to plan well for infrastructure, social welfare, and economic development.

The NIMC Director-General believes this underscores the importance of identity, and directly links to the importance of the commemoration of the Nigerian National Identity Day.

Aziz, therefore, applauded President Muhammadu Buhari for the support he has granted to the Commission throughout the lifespan of his administration.

He added: “The support of Mr. President to NIMC goes to show the importance he places on digital identity.

“He may not be physically here with us today on this occasion of the fourth edition of Nigeria’s commemoration of Identity Day, but it was the approval Mr. President gave in 2019 for every 16th September to be officially marked as Identity Day in Nigeria that provided the platform for today’s ceremony.â€

The NIMC Chief also commended Prof. Isa Ali Pantami, Honourable Minister for Communications and Digital Economy,

He noted that Minister has been at the forefront of spearheading the Commission’s programmes.
