*Twitter has threatened to sue global technology giant Meta over the latter’s new Threads app, as the leading microblogging site, in a letter to Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, accuses his firm of ‘wilful’ misappropriation of trade secrets

Sequel to the release and activation of the company’s new social media platform, Twitter has sent a letter to Mark Zuckerberg, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Meta and owner of Threads app, threatening legal action.

绿帽献妻 reports the new-fangled Threads platform, which recorded over 10 million in the first seven hours of release early Thursday, July 6 now has over 30 million users worldwide as of morning Friday, July 7, 2023.

Meta had, as expected, launched its Twitter rival Threads Thursday, and very quickly it surpassed 30 million sign ups, amid warnings from analysts it could pose a true threat to Elon Musk鈥檚 Twitter, Silicon UK report also noted.

Consequently, Twitter has threatened to sue Meta Platforms over its new Threads platform in a letter sent to the Facebook parent’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg by Twitter’s lawyer Alex Spiro.

Earlier, Jack Dorsey and Elon Musk had initially responded to the launch by joking about Threads data collection code of practice.

And even current Twitter CEO, Linda Yaccarino, did not seem to be overly concerned, after she tweeted that Twitter was 鈥渙ften imitated 鈥� but the Twitter community can never be duplicated.鈥�

Threads a real threat to Twitter?

However, given the scale of the Threads signups from users unhappy at the current state of Twitter under the controversial ownership of Elon Musk over the last 24 hours, the tone soon changed.

鈥淢eta鈥檚 release of Threads came at the perfect time to give it a fighting chance to unseat Twitter,鈥� Niklas Myhr, professor of marketing at Chapman University, was quoted by Reuters as saying Thursday, in reference to the turmoil at Twitter after it limited the number of tweets users can see.

鈥淭hreads will be off to a running start as it is built upon the Instagram platform with its massive user base, and if users adopt Threads, advertisers will be following closely behind,鈥� Myhr reportedly added.

Threads is automatically linked to a user鈥檚 Instagram account 鈥� a move than provides access to more than 2 billion monthly active Instagram users.

Meta is pitching Threads as Instagram鈥檚 friendly and open text-based conversation app, and to tempt Twitter users, its interface is similar to the microblogging platform.

Twitter letter to Zuckerberg

And now X Corp鈥檚 (owner of Twitter) lawyer Alex Spiro has threatened to sue Meta in a letter to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, accusing Meta of the 鈥渨ilful鈥� misappropriation of trade secrets.

In the letter, Spiro alleged that Meta鈥檚 Threads was built by former Twitter employees 鈥渄eliberately assigned鈥� to develop a 鈥渃opycat鈥� app.

In the letter however, Spiro offered no concrete examples of Twitter employees using trade secrets to build the app. But many believe the letter is a sign of Musk鈥檚 level of concern, given Meta鈥檚 user base and technical expertise.

Accusation of misappropriation of trade secrets, other confidential information

鈥淏ased on recent reports regarding your recently launched 鈥楾hreads鈥� app, Twitter has serious concerns that Meta Platforms has engaged in systematic, wilful and unlawful misappropriation of Twitter鈥檚 trade secrets and other intellectual property,鈥� wrote Spiro.

Spiro said over the past year Meta had hired dozens of former Twitter employees, who allegedly had access to Twitter鈥檚 trade secrets and other highly confidential information.

Spiro alleged Meta used these former Twitter staff to accelerate the development of Meta鈥檚 competing app.

But it should be noted that Meta has been developing a Twitter rival for a good few years now.

In August 2019, reports emerged that Facebook was developing a new app called Threads, built on top of Instagram.

Spiro said Twitter intends to 鈥渟trictly enforce its intellectual property rights,鈥� and demanded that Meta stop using using any of the undisclosed Twitter trade secrets.

Spiro also wrote that Meta is 鈥渆xpressly prohibited from engaging in any crawling or scraping of Twitter鈥檚 followers or following data.鈥�

鈥淧lease consider this letter a formal notice that Meta must preserve any documents that could be relevant to a dispute between Twitter, Meta, and/or former Twitter employees who now work for Meta,鈥� Spiro concluded.

There has already been a response to the letter from Meta.

Meta responds

鈥淣o one on the Threads engineering team is a former Twitter employee,鈥� Andy Stone, Meta Communications Director, posted on Threads. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 just not a thing.鈥�

Elon Musk, however, has also waded in, tweeting 鈥渃ompetition is fine, cheating is not.鈥�
