The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and  Trade Union Congress (TUC) of Nigeria have both declared an indefinite strike, scheduled to commence Tuesday, October 3, 2023.

Joe Ajaero, NLC President,

and Festus Osifo, President of TUC, disclosed this development after their separate Emergency National Executive Council (INEC) meetings Tuesday, September 26, 2023, in Abuja, FCT.

In a communique the two Presidents read Tuesday, the indefinite industrial action is being called due to the alleged insensitivity of the Federal Government to the sufferings of Nigerian consumers after  the removal of petrol subsidy in the West African country.

The Labour leaders also said the decision to go on the indefinite strike was reached due to the continuous demonstration of unwillingness and complete lack of initiative on the part of the authorities.

The two unions as well urged their state chapters to mobilise for protests across Nigeria.

It is recalled the NLC had earlier embarked on a two-day warning strike between Tuesday, September 5, and Wednesday, September 6 this year.

In view of the threat to embark on full-scale, indefinite strike, Simon Lalong, Honourable Minister for Labour and Employment, has appealed to the NLC leadership to halt the planned strike, come October 3.

Lalong has also assured them that the Federal Government is determined to address the concerns raised by the two Labour unions.
