The Leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) evening Friday, September 29, 2023, shunned a meeting the Nigerian Government had summoned as part of efforts at averting the planned nationwide strike from October 3.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ learnt late evening Friday, that the two Labour Unions said the Federal Government’s invitation came late as they already had scheduled engagements outside Abuja, FCT.

Earlier, as part of the moves to avert Organised Labour’s ‘indefinite strike’ from Tuesday, October 3, 2023, the Federal Government had summoned an emergency meeting with leaders of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC).

The meeting scheduled to hold later evening Friday, September 29 in the Conference Room of the Office of the Chief of Staff (CoS) to the President, at the State House, Abuja, was expected to be part of the current move to stop the planned strike.

Recall the Labour Unions had, at a joint press conference held Tuesday, in Abuja, had declared an indefinite nationwide industrial action from October 3, following the Federal Government’s reported failure to address the hardships being inflicted on Nigerian consumers due to removal of fuel subsidy in the economy.

Have Labour Unions suspended their planned industrial action?

Earlier, Olajide Oshundun, Director of Press for the Ministry of Labour and Employment, was said to have announced that the NLC and the Federal Government had “entered an agreement to suspend the proposed strike.” Oshundun, however, denied making such a statement, according to report.

Similarly, Benson Upah, Head of Information and Public Affairs at NLC, in a statement Thursday, September 28, also refuted the report about suspending the proposed strike.

Upah stated: “We do not have any agreement with the government to suspend the planned strike action.

“Neither do we have any date for a meeting with government that may lead to the suspension of the proposed strike.”
