In connection with the recent rise in the number of confirmed Coronavirus cases in Nigeria and the need for increased capacity at the isolation centres, Mr. Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF) and Chairman, Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19, again, has revealed that isolation and treatment centres in the country are running out of bed spaces.

The PTF Chairman stated this Friday, May 8, at the briefing by the Presidential Task Force in Abuja, FCT.

绿帽献妻 gathered that Mustapha, however, noted that efforts are being intensified to increase the number of treatment centres in the country.

He said: 鈥淲e have received reports from the states, which suggest that the treatment centres are running out of bed spaces.

鈥淎s we assess the situation, the PTF shall also begin to examine our peculiar circumstances, modify the strategies for care management, and consider viable alternatives, where necessary.

鈥淎t the appropriate time, the guidelines and protocols shall be unfolded.鈥�

Meanwhile, as of Friday, May 8, the country according to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) disclosed in a tweet via its verified twitter account, that Nigeria confirmed 386 new cases, making the total number of Coronavirus cases 3, 912 with 679 discharged patients and 117 deaths.

While admitting that the situation might be worrisome, the SGF noted that it is largely a function of the country鈥檚 improved testing capacity.

The SGF also added that the number of infections does not necessarily translate into an increased fatality rate.

Lagos State, which is regarded as the epicentre of the COVID-19 cases in the country, has also predicted about 120,000 cases.

Prof. Akin Abayomi, Honourable Commissioner for Health in Lagos State, at a media briefing on COVID-19 update Friday, May8, in Lagos, said that the state might record between 90,000 and 120,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 reaching its peak by July or August 2020.

The commissioner said the state recorded its highest number of infections on May 7 with 183 new cases confirmed.

Abayomi also disclosed that Alimosho, Oshodi and Isolo Local Government Areas of the state were beginning to record increased cases of COVID-19.

According to him, 97 percent of patients at the state鈥檚 isolation centres are mild and moderate cases, with only three percent being severe cases.

Abayomi said mortality rate from the infection was more among males, adding that those with underlying conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and cancer were at higher risk.

Lagos has upscaled its testing capacity to reach more people toward flattening the curve of the virus spread, the Lagos State Commissioner for Health stated.
