For committing serious environmental infractions in the ‘Gateway State’, the Ogun State Government (OGSG) has commenced the demolition of shanties and makeshift structures used by street-traders at Kara, Isheri, OPIC axis of the popular Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports Alhaji Farook Akintunde, Leader of the Ogun State Environmental Special Taskforce, who is also Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Governor on Environment, disclosed the Taskforce recently carried out the exercise after the expiration of the 21-day ultimatum earlier given to the street-traders to leave the axis of the state.

Akintunde noted that continuous presence in the axis despite several warnings and abatement notices has constituted nuisance to the environment

According to him, the defaulters have not only debased the environment but also turned the axis into rest rooms through open defecation.

The SSA to Ogun State Governor also explained that the clearing exercise was necessary as all the shanties and the makeshift structures had become risks to law-abiding citizens of the state living in that axis as such shanties were being used as hideouts by criminals.

Akintunde stated: “Ogun State Government will not fold its hands and watch few elements constitute themselves  to security threats to our people while camouflaging to be traders in their illegal shanties and makeshift structures.

“To even think of it, no serious businessman will partner us, seeing them at the gateway of our state with their shanties and  garbages, so we will not allow them to tarnish our image as the nation’s Industrial hub with their filth and environmental carelessness.”

He further revealed that the state government would immediately green the recovered areas with beautiful grass and lawns which all residents of the state will be proud of on completion.

The Leaders of the Taskforce, however, warned the displaced street-traders not to test the will of the state government by attempting to stage a comeback in the affected axis.

Meanwhile, residents of Isheri have commended the state government for the demolition exercise with Chief Kola Akande, Asipa of Isheri, Barrister Mike Madogwe, Legal Adviser of the Isheri Estate Communities and Engr. Dayo Ayandokun, the Assistant General Secretary of all communities in the border towns between Ogun and Lagos states.

They declared the laudable sanitation exercise had brought relief to the residents of the axis in regard to security of lives and property.

The residents also urged the Ogun State Government to occupy the reclaimed areas to forestall the street-traders’ comeback to the Kara, Isheri and OPIC areas of the state.
