COP28: Sanwo-Olu affirms investors’ interest in Lagos waste conversion initiatives

The

participation and pitching sessions presented by the Lagos State Government (LASG) at the ongoing United Nations Summit on Climate and 28th session of Conference of Parties (COP28), in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), has yielded immediate dividend of opportunities from global investors.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports the two waste conversion initiatives, which Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State pitched at the climate summit, have attracted significant interest from investors.

The initiatives are Advanced Garbage Collection and Waste-to-Energy project, and building of new Sewage Treatment Plant.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, who excitedly, disclosed the Development vis his verified X (formerly Twitter) account, announced the “two waste conversion initiatives that we presented at the global climate summit have garnered significant interest from investors.”

The Lagos State Governor stated: “These projects are the Advanced Garbage Collection and Waste-to-Energy project, as well as the construction of a new Sewage Treatment Plant.â€

Sanwo-Olu said he had the opportunity to announce the development and also present Phase Two of the Lagos Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan (LCARP) to the global partners at the summit.

This progress represents a significant step forward in the journey towards achieving environmental sustainability and resilience in Lagos State, stated he.

According to him, the development demonstrates his administration’s commitment to improving the lives of Lagosians and maintaining the state’s status as a beacon of progress on the African continent.

Sanwo-Olu further affirmed that the Lagos State’s engagement at COP28 is driven by the goal of fostering collaboration and partnership to address the collective threat of climate change to the citizens.

Lagos Government’s strategic roadmap designed for sustainable future, says governor

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the state government believes that sustainable solutions to our local environmental challenges can be achieved by working together.

He said: “I emphasised that the LCARP document serves as our strategic roadmap towards a sustainable future.

“This framework identifies 30 ambitious projects spanning critical sectors such as transportation, renewable energy, and waste management.â€

The governor as well hinted that 24 of the total 30 projects are well-suited for Public-Private Partnerships (PPP).

He also affirmed that his administration understands the importance of collaboration, and is actively engaging with potential partners to ensure their involvement in bringing the Lagos state government plans to fruition.

The Lagos Government is ready to take the lead and has developed a clear strategy to achieve it’s climate mitigation objectives, he stated.

Sanwo-Olu said: “The success of Lagos on this journey will not only be a success for Nigeria but also an inspiring story of achievement for Africa and the world.”

Hints on Lagos strategic response to Climate Change -Commissioner

Jubril Gawat, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor of Lagos State on New Media, also disclosed that Tokunbo Wahab, Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources in the global arena, in Dubai, said Lagos was desirous of environmental sustainability, because of the threat posed by observed rise in sea level and extreme temperatures.

Wahab told the summit participants, that Lagos State Climate Adaptation and Resilience Plan (LCARP) document was the second of four planned frameworks designed by the State Government as strategic response to climate change.

Likewise, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, Managing Director of Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA), confirmed that Lagos faces escalating waste management issues, leading to flooding during extreme weather events in Nigeria.

Gbadegesin stated that  introduction of Waste-to-Energy plants would facilitate improved waste collection, treatment, while reducing land demand for landfills.

The project will be sited in Epe area of Lagos and it is expected to process 760 kilo tonnes of municipal solid waste per year, said Gbadegesin, Managing Director of LAWMA.
