Against the backdrop of the current high inflationary rate and attendant increasing cost of living across Nigeria, several residents of Minna, Niger State capital, Monday, February 5, 2024, protested, blocking major roads within the metropolis in the process.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ learnt the protesters, who included women and youths in the state, were heard chanting protest songs, while security agents including policemen watched on.

The concerned consumers also lamented the rising costs of food items, and alleged the government’s poor effort at arresting the worrisome situation forced them to block major roads, so the appropriate authorities could hear their cry and do something to curb the spiralling inflation in the Nigerian economy.

Addressing the protesters, Yakubu Garba, Deputy Governor of Niger State, said the state government is aware of the pain and hardship families are confronted with as of now.

Garba also assured the protesters that the Niger State Government is working towards reducing the cost of living and consequences of the petrol subsidy removal.

It is recalled President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his inaugural address Monday, May 29, 2023, had announced the removal of the controversial fuel subsidy in the economy.

Many Nigerian consumers however, have attributed the current high inflation and increasing cost of living to the effects of discontinuation of the petrol subsidy regime in the West African country.
