Delta 17: Tinubu announces scholarships, housing for children and families of slain Officers, soldiers

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has said the Federal Government will provide a house to each of the families of fallen heroes and scholarships to all the children of the deceased up to the University level.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports the President stated this Wednesday, March 27, 2024, in his address delivered at the funeral of the 17 Officers and Men of the Nigerian Armed Forces, at the National Cemetery, Abuja, FCT.

Tinubu, in his address, said the country would forever remember them “as heroes who answered the call of duty and paid the ultimate price.”

He also listed names of the 17 Officers and soldiers as:

  1. Lieutenant Colonel Ali,
  2. Major D.E Obi,
  3. Major S.D. Ashafa,
  4. Captain U. Zakari,
  5. Staff Sergeant Yahaya Saidu,
  6. Corporal Danbaba Yahaya,
  7. Corporal Kabir Bashir,
  8. Lance Corporal Abdullahi Ibrahim,
  9. Lance Corporal Bulus Haruna,
  10. Lance Corporal Sole Opeyemi,
  11. Lance Corporal Bello Anas;
  12. Private Alhaji Isah,
  13. Private Clement Francis,
  14. Private Abubakar Ali,
  15. Private Adamu Ibrahim,
  16. Private Hamman Peter, and
  17. Private Ibrahim Adamu.

Government support for families, other dependants of fallen heroes

President Tinubu stated: “It is now our duty to protect the families of our departed heroes.

The Federal Government will provide a house in any part of our country to each of the families of the four officers and 13 soldiers.

“The Federal Government has also approved scholarships to all the children of the deceased up to the University level.”

The President as well directed that the Military must, within the next ninety days, ensure that all the benefits of the departed are paid to their families.

“May the families of the departed and all their loved ones find the strength to bear the pain of this loss,” stated he.

Tinubu equally noted that each man now belongs to the hallowed list of servicemen and women who defended our country and protected their fellow Nigerians not minding the risk to their own lives.

They have all been awarded posthumous national honours. The four gallant Officers have been accorded the Award of Member of the Order of Niger (MON).

The thirteen courageous soldiers who also lost their lives have been Awarded the Officer of the Federal Republic Medal.

President Tinubu further stated: “I commiserate with the families of our fallen heroes and the entire Armed Forces.

“I share in the pain and grief you carry today. It is my prayer that God will comfort all who are bereaved as a result of this tragedy.”

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces added: “It is worth restating the debt of gratitude we owe these valiant soldiers and their families.

“As Commander-In-Chief, I do not take the contributions of members of our Armed Forces  for granted. I recognise your valour and bravery.

I honour your unflinching commitment to making our country safe from criminals, bandits, kidnappers and insurrectionists.

While we continue to grieve for the courageous men we lost that day, let us also, on this solemn occasion, be reminded of the unfinished business of working for peace and harmony in our communities.”
