Energy Sustainability: Minister applauds NNPCL for progress on AKK Gas Pipeline Project

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed satisfaction with the level of progress recorded on the AKK Gas Pipeline Project.

Mr. Olawale Edun, Honourable Minister for Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, who stated this Friday, June 20, 2024, in Kaduna, Northern Nigeria, commended the team for their doggedness and dedication.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC Limited) team is spearheaded the AKK Pipeline Project in the country.

Edun, in company with the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Mohammed Idris, Honourable Minister for Information and National Orientation, and Malam Mele Kyari, Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) of NNPCL, Friday visited the Kaduna State section of the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) Gas  Pipeline Project.

The Kaduna State Deputy Governor, Hadiza Balarabe, who represented Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, received the Federal Government’s delegation.

Speaking during the visit, Edun emphasised the importance of the project to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration Strategy to grow the economy and create jobs.

According to him, the Federal Government is committed to providing all necessary support towards ensuring the completion of the project within six to nine months.

Mohammed Manga, FCIA, Director of Information and Public Relations at the Federal Ministry of Finance, in a statement Friday explained the energy infrastructure project aims at expanding Nigeria’s gas pipeline network in response to growing power demand and the need for gas-based industries.

Manga stated: “This ambitious project features a 40-inch by 614-kilometer pipeline stretching from Ajaokuta to Kano, complete with intermediate and terminal gas facilities.”

The Director of Information disclosed some of the expected impacts of the AKK Gas Pipeline Project to include the following:

  • Economic growth: The AKK project will boost power generation, revitalise dormant industries, promote new industrial development, and provide alternative transportation fuels along its corridor.
  • Job creation: Thousands of employment opportunities will be created, significantly reducing poverty.
  • Energy sustainability: The AKK pipeline will stem the rate of deforestation and provide an alternative fuel for power, cooking, transportation and industrial activities in key States like Abuja, Kaduna, and Kano, transforming Nigeria’s energy landscape, and
  • Challenges overcome: Despite challenges, such as COVID-19, global inflation, and extreme weather conditions, the Nigerian Government observed the project has advanced, employing over 2000 workers of whom 1,925 of them are Nigerians.

“The project also engaged 61 local contractors, showcasing the resilience of the support from Federal Government, the statement noted.
