NASS expedited consideration of bill to increase Minimum Wage to N70,000

Passing the bill into an Act Tuesday, the Senate passed the bill, which had scaled through second and third readings, shortly after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu transmitted it to the Upper Legislative Chamber.

The Senators, in a unanimous vote after a clause consideration in the Committee of the Whole Tuesday, made the National Minimum Wage Bill scale the third reading and passed the bill into an Act.

It was learnt President Tinubu, earlier Tuesday, had transmitted the National Minimum Wage Bill to the National Assembly for consideration and passage.

The President separately, wrote to the Senate and the House of Representatives requesting “expedited consideration of a bill for an Act to amend the National Minimum Wage Act, 2019 to increase the National Minimum Wage from N30,000 to N70,000.

He also requested the Federal lawmakers to reduce the time for a periodic review of the National Minimum Wage from initial five years to three years, and related matters.

The truce between the Federal Government and Labour sides was sequel to series of talks between Labour leaders and the President in the last few weeks after months of failed talks between Labour organs and a tripartite committee on minimum wage, which the Nigerian leader had constituted January 2024.
