Tinubu’s signing of new Minimum Wage Act into law a promise kept: Presidential Aide

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Monday, July 29, 2024, in the State House, Abuja, FCT, signed Nigeria’s new Minimum Wage Act into law.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports the new National Minimum Wage law had been passed by the National Assembly (NASS), and the bill provides a N70,000 benchmark or both the public and private sectors of the economy.

The President’s action came days after the National Assembly (NASS) had passed the Minimum Wage Act, 2019 to increase the National Minimum Wage from current N30,000 to N70,000.

Tinubu assented to the Minimum Wage Act in the presence of Senate President Godswill Akpabio, and other National Assembly leaders Monday.

Commenting after President Tinubu’s assent to the document, elated Sen. Akpabio told reporters that “we are not only doubling the Minimum Wage, we have added something on top. Initially, it was N30,000, now it is N70,000.â€

In his remarks also, Basheer Lado, Special Adviser to the President on Senate Matters, in a statement said the signing of the new Minimum Wage Act into law was a promise kept.

Lado stated: “The signing of the minimum wage bill into law by His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is both a promise kept and a demonstration of his people-centric governance model.

“Tinubu promised to pay a living wage to Nigerian workers during his electioneering campaigns and he has kept that promise.â€
