Economic Sabotage: Tijani condemns attack, looting at NCC’s ICT Centre by Kano protesters

Sequel to destruction of the digital entrepreneurship centre, Dr. ’Bosun Tijani, Honourable Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Thursday, August 1, 2024, expressed dismay over the destruction of the Digital Industrial Park (DIP), an initiative of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), located in Kano State, Northern Nigeria.

ñ learnt the digital facility, which was vandalised and looted during the protest Thursday, was initially slated for commissioning August 7, 2024.

The #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria protesters are against the current economic hardship the action which is fast taking violent turn in several cities across the country, said reports.

The NCC has designed the Information and Communications Technology (ICT) park to support Nigeria’s technical talent accelerator programme, tagged, 3MTT.

Reacting to the incident Thursday, Dr. Tijani via his verified social media account, lamented the incident, as he stated: “Sad to learn that our Digital Innovation Park, in Kano, slated for launch next week to support our technical talent accelerator (3MTT) has been set ablaze and looted by protesters.”

The rampaging #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria young protesters Thursday turned violent and torched a section of the completed but yet-to-be-commissioned Digital Industrial Park of the NCC.

In his comment on measures to protect lives and property of the residents of the state, Salma Dogo, Kano State Commissioner of Police, in a telephone interview Thursday revealed that the protesters set ablaze the generator house, vandalised the DIP office complex, and looted several digital equipment and other property, agency report noted.

Besides the NCC’s ICT Centre, the civil unrest also extended to parts of the Audu Bako Secretariat, including the state high courts, which the protesters looted and set on fire.

The rioting youths equally attacked other establishments, such as supermarkets and mosques in Kano City.

Narrating the scenario at the DIP facility Thursday, in Kano, eye-witnesses described scenes at the ICT centre as “chaotic”, as where protesters were seen carting away desktop computers, chairs, keyboards, and other valuable appliances before setting the Park on fire, according to reports.
