Senator Shehu Sani, a former Federal lawmaker, representing Kaduna State, in the National Assembly (NASS), in Abuja, FCT, has condemned the arson, violence, and avoidable deaths recorded in some parts of the country, which trailed the nationwide protests tagged, #EndBadGovernanceInNigeria, especially in the North, and alleged they were an attempt to overthrow the Nigerian Government.

ñ reports Senator Sani, who stated this while featuring as a guest on a Channels TV programme monitored Tuesday, August 6, 2024, in Lagos, also purported that some days prior to the protest, money, and some foreign countries’ flags were shared among the youths in the Northern region to activate the protest in the West African country.

The nationwide protest, which began Thursday, August 1, was planned to last for 10 days, as the protesters are demanding the reversal of some government policies, including the removal of the controversial fuel subsidy regime, devaluation of the Naira, and high costs of foods and other commodities in the economy.

The protest from the very first day August 1, however, turned violent in some states, such as Kano, Kaduna, Niger, and Jigawa, recoding human casualties in the process.

Explain the apparent intent of the demonstrators, Sani said: “A day before the last protest, money was shared to the youths, and Russian flags were also shared.

“That shows that the whole intent of the protest is not simply about the policies and programmes of the government.”

The former legislator also asserted: “There was an attempt to create an atmosphere where there would be an overthrow of the government.

“When you have this kind of situation, you will see that someone is writing a script for anarchy, lawlessness, and disorder. It is incumbent for someone like us to speak.”

Reports had indicated that during the “hunger protest” in Kaduna, Kano, Zamfara, Bauchi, and some states in Northern Nigeria, some protesters openly waved Russian flags amid calls for military intervention in the country.

Security agencies arrest 7 foreigners over raising of other countries’ flags

In a related development, and amid the confusing atmosphere during the protest, Nigeria Police officers and military officers intervened with teargas canisters as hundreds of Nigerians holding Nigerian flags, banners and placards gathered to march through the streets.

Government sources confirmed Wednesday, August 7 that the authorities had arrested seven foreign nationals for allegedly raising the flags of other countries, as well as hundreds of Nigerians during anti-government protest.

Peter Afunaya, Spokesman for the Department of State Services (DSS), stated the security agencies arrested the foreigners along with protesters in Kano State.

Afunaya, at a meeting at the Foreign Ministry with foreign diplomats, in Abuja, reportedly said: “They were arrested two days ago in Kano.”

Though the DSS Spokesman did not provide details about the suspects, he said they were Polish, agency report said.

Minister warns against interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs

Meanwhile, Amb. Yusuf Tuggar, Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs, has warned against external interference in Nigeria’s internal affairs.

Addressing the members of the diplomatic corps in Abuja, Tuggar stated: “The government would take appropriate action against any foreign entity residing in Nigeria that is found to have directly or indirectly supported the protesters by whatever means or seeks to interfere in the internal affairs of the country.”

Nigeria saw protests last week as demonstrators demanded good governance and a solution to economic hardship and the high cost of living.
