Nigeria’s Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has announced that the market regulatory Commission has yet to issue any cryptocurrency licences to operators in the West African country.

Contrary to certain reports in the public space, the Commission only plans to start issuing licences for digital services and tokenised assets August 2024.

ñ reports this development follows market regulators’ increased scrutiny of cryptocurrency exchanges, and a push to regulate the industry, including a mandate for exchanges to delist the Naira from peer-to-peer trading to prevent currency manipulation.

Dr. Emomotimi Agama, Director-General of SEC Nigeria, stated in a text message (SMS) that “approval is yet to be given to anyone,” TechCabal report said.
