Telecoms services, QoE will improve as Nigeria gazettes protection of critical information infrastructure ─Minister

Dr. ’Bosun Tijani, Honourable Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, has said the recent designation and protection of Nigeria’s Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) as a priority for the current administration will help to improve the quality of telecoms services in the West African country.

ñ reports Dr. Tijani, who made this assertion via his verified social media account Wednesday, August 21, 2024, appreciated and lauded President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for the release of the official gazette titled, “Designation and Protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure Order, 2024”.

The Minister stated: “This is a significant step that will strengthen and protect investments in the ICT (Information and Communications Technology) sector by reducing incidences capable of damaging the operations and functionality of our technological systems, infrastructure and networks.”

On the far-reaching impact of the development on service providers’ Quality of Service (QoS) and consumers’ Quality of Experience (QoE) in the telecoms ecosystem, he also assured Nigerians, that the security and protection of these Critical National Information Infrastructure is a priority for this administration.”

This “will help improve the quality of telecoms services which has very often been affected by disruption and intentional damage,” said Tijani.

According to him, the new official gazette now makes it “an offence to wilfully damage assets such as Telco towers/sites, switch stations, data centres, satellite infrastructure, submarine & fibre optic cables, transmission equipment, e-government platforms, databases, among many others” in the country.

The Minister reassured industry stakeholders, noting “we will continue to work to create the enabling and supportive environment and policies for our digital economy to thrive.”
