The much-awaited Lagos Mass Transit Red Rail Line is now ready as the project begins partial (test) operations Wednesday, August 28, 2024, from Marina, on Lagos Island to Agbado, in Ogun State of Nigeria.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports the development is sequel to several months of planning and training of technical cum ground staff, installation of security features, and six-week trial run without passengers in order to ensure safety, reliability and efficiency of the rail transportation system between Lagos and Ogun States, in the South-West region.

The mass transit rail project also connects Lagos with Ogun State, as several workers and business owners in Lagos reside in Ogun.

Kolawole Ojelabi, Spokesperson for the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), who announced the free partial operations Tuesday, August 27, stated that the trains would convey passengers for free, and run four trips a day between Oyingbo, in Lagos State, and Agbado, a boundary community, in Ogun State.

LAMATA noted the Red Rail Line is one of the six rail lines and one monorail prescribed for the state in its Strategic Transport Master Plan (STMP).

Ojelabi also affirmed the milestone recorded on the Red Rail Line project marked the culmination of planning and training of technical and ground staff, installation of security features and a successful six-week trial run conducted without passengers to ensure the system’s safety, reliability and efficiency.

The LAMATA Spokesperson stated: “From Wednesday, August 28, the Red Line system will interact with non-fee-paying passengers in organised groups to collect feedback before the commencement of commercial operations.

“The partial operations, similar to what was done during the test phase of the Blue Line, is a major step forward in realising the Lagos State Government’s vision of a modern, efficient, integrated and sustainable transportation system.â€

The statement further noted: “The Red Line’s first phase, a 27-kilometre rail road from Agbado to Oyingbo, will provide a reliable and affordable transportation option for commuters, reducing traffic congestion and improving the quality of life for Lagos residents.â€
