Nutrition Security: Nigerian Government proposes temporary zero-duty on selected food items

As part of ongoing measures to boost food production and availability, reduce prices and provide immediate relief to Nigerians, the Federal Government has proposed a temporary zero-duty levy on selected food imports.

Mr. Olawale Edun, Honourable Minister for Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, announced this development after a closed-door meeting with the Nigeria Customs Service Board, in Abuja, FCT.

The Minister affirmed the cushioning measure is aimed at increasing food availability, reducing prices, and providing immediate relief to the citizenry.

Mohammed Manga, Director of Information and Public Relations of the Ministry, who noted the development in a statement, further explained that the initiative was designed to alleviate the current food shortage and reduce soaring food prices, which has been major contributor to inflation across the country.

Edun as well gave assured Nigerian consumers, that as this initiative offers immediate relief, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is focused on providing long-term solutions, particularly boosting domestic food production through availability of essential farming inputs to small holder farmers in the country.
