The Federal Government and the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on implementation of the N70,000 New Minimum Wage (NMW).

Eno Olotu, Head of Information and Public Relations, Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HoCSF), who disclosed this development in a statement Friday, September 20, 2024, said the Committee on salaries for Nigerian civil servants had agreed that the New Minimum Wage would be implemented effective from July 29 this year.

ñ reports the latest agreement is part of the resolutions reached at the end of the Committee’s meeting Friday, in Abuja, FCT.

The Committee also recommended that the wage award, which the Federal Government discontinued, should be paid until July 28.

Led by Mrs. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, the Committee further submitted that the Federal Government considered the economic situation in the country before making its decisions.

In her remarks after signing the MoU with the Labour, Walson-Jack, who is also Chairman of the Committee, commended members for the painstaking effort at carrying out their assigned task.

“Both the Trade Union and the Government sides have agreed on the Consequential Adjustments in Salaries arising from the New Minimum Wage of N70,000,” said the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation.

She stated all the members considered the MoU, and had all signed copies, concluding the exercise by handing over copies to representatives on both sides at the meeting.

Walson-Jack described the assignment as the shortest and most peaceful negotiations thus far.

The signed copy of the MOU, she said, would be forwarded to the Federal Government for further action.

Commenting on the development, Comrade Benjamin Anthony, National Chairman of the Joint Negotiating Council, representing the Trade Unions, commended the HoCSF and expressed satisfaction with the committee’s work.
