President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Sen. Monday Okpebholo on winning the just-concluded governorship election held Saturday, September 21, 2024, in Edo State.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), which declared Okpebholo, the Governorship Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner of the keenly-contested gubernatorial election, said he won with 291,667 votes to defeat his closest rival, Asue Ighodalo of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who polled 247,274 votes.

Olumide Akpata, Governorship Candidate of the Labour Party (LP), came a distant third with 22, 763 votes, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Congratulating the winner, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Sunday, September 22, 2024, disclosed President Tinubu, also urged Sen. Okpebholo to not gloat over his latest electoral victory.

The President said Okpebholo’s victory is a clear demonstration of the people’s support for the APC in the South-South state.

Tinubu commended the APC leaders for working hard to achieve victory in Edo state, while urging aggrieved parties to seek redress in court.

The statement noted: “President Bola Tinubu congratulates Senator Monday Okpebholo, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate in Saturday’s Edo State governorship election, on his victory at the polls.

“He urges Senator Okpebholo not to gloat over his victory but to see it as a challenging call to service.”

The Nigerian leader also urged the winner “to demonstrate magnanimity by reaching out to his political rivals and uniting the people of Edo State to ensure its development.”

The President stated: “I commend the INEC and our security agencies for working round the clock to conduct a successful, peaceful and largely hitch-free exercise.”

Edo people have spoken with their votes, says House Speaker Abbas

In his comment on the outcome of the last government election in Edo State, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, in the National Assembly (NASS), also congratulated Senator Okpebholo on his victory in Saturday’s polls.

Musa Abdullahi Krishi, media aide to Dr. Abbas, Monday, September 23, 2024, stated that the people of Edo State have spoken with their votes for the winner.

The Speaker as well congratulated Hon. Dennis Idahosa, Deputy Governor-elect, who is also a serving member of the Federal Legislature, on the electoral victory.

As serving members of NASS, Hon. Abbas asserted that more legislators are now holding significant stakes in politics and governance in Nigeria.

He, therefore, urged both Okpebholo and Idahosa to work together for the common good of the people of Edo State.

They should remain good ambassadors of the National Assembly, stated Abbas.

Meanwhile, former President Muhammadu Buhari, has also congratulated Okpebholo on his victory in the election.

Malam Garba Shehu, Buhari’s Spokesman, in a statement noted the former President, who described the outcome as “historic electoral victory”, urged the winners and the losers to work together to promote democracy in the state.

Buhari as well commended the law enforcement agencies for their efforts in ensuring a peaceful election.

The ex-President stated: “Congratulations to the APC and the election winner, Senator Monday Okpebholo on the historic electoral victory and my warmest wishes for a new lease of life for Edo State and its people.”
