Scores of highly-placed officials, including Amb. Yusuf M. Tuggar, Honourable Minister for Foreign Affairs; Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Honourable Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy; Malam Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, CCIE, Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Nigerian diplomats, and United Nations officials Monday, September 23, 2024, welcomed Vice-President Kashim Shettima, GCON, as his jet touched down at the John F. Kennedy International Airport, for the 79th United Nations General Assembly (UNGA), holding in New York, United States (US).

ñ Vice-President Shettima, at the instance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is leading Nigeria’s delegation to this year’s UNGA.

The Vice-President will be delivering the country’s “national statement” and participate in various high-level meetings while in the US.

Earlier, the Federal Government had indicated that President Tinubu would not attend the UNGA79 session in New York this year.

Tinubu thus directed Vice-President Shettima to lead Nigeria’s delegation to the session.

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, who disclosed this development in a statement September 19, said President Tinubu would rather focus on “domestic issues and address some of the country’s challenges”, especially after the recent devastating flooding in some parts of the country.

Onunuga also affirmed, that while at UNGA 79, Shettima would deliver the West African country’s national statement to the General Assembly, attend important sideline events, and hold bilateral meetings.

The government noted the high-level General Debate, with the theme “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for the advancement of peace, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations,” would hold between September 24 and September 28, 2024, in New York.
