NCC’s Maida to speak on ‘Modernising Regulations for the Digital Era’ at GSMA Conference in Kigali

As regards the crucial role of regulations in the ever-evolving global digital ecosystem, Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) is slated to be a keynote speaker at the forthcoming “Modernising Regulations for the Digital Era” conference Thursday, October 31, 2024, at MWC Kigali.

Describing the session, the GSMA Public Policy, in a recent announcement mentioned Dr. Maida as the keynote speaker, restated the strategic role of regulations in navigating the complexities of a globalised, ever-evolving digital environment, characterised by rapid change in economic, social, and technological conditions as well as internationalised competition.

The GSM Public Policy also said that emerging technologies and new business models are putting regulatory paradigms to the test.

The regulatory body further explained: “More than ever, regulation needs to evolve, be adaptable and flexible to promote innovation and embrace the opportunities presented by technological advancement to address our challenges.

“For regulatory reforms to be beneficial, the regulatory regimes need to be transparent, coherent, and comprehensive, by establishing the appropriate institutional framework, liberalising network industries, advocating and enforcing competition policy and law and opening external and internal markets to trade and investment.â€

It said future-proof regulatory frameworks would reduce regulatory asymmetries and promote competition, innovation, and investment in the digital ecosystem.

According GSMA Public Policy, this session of the forum delves into the fairness of regulatory frameworks in the region.

These include reforms to foster competition and protects consumers without impeding commercial activity or economic progress, including minimising regulatory interventions, minimising regulatory asymmetry and reducing regulatory compliance cost.
