Aviation: Emirates Airlines resumes flight operations in Nigeria after 2-year break

Emirates Airlines, the flag carrier of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), has resumed flight operations into Nigeria, as the firm’s airplane Tuesday, October 1, 2024, landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), in Ikeja, Lagos State, after the carrier suspended its operations into the West African country for over two years.

The aviation firm operated the flight service, using a Boeing 777-300ER with the flight number EK 783, was welcomed with water canon salute upon landing Tuesday at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos.

ñ had reported the Middle East-based major, long haul carrier, earlier had announced its resumption of flight operations to Nigeria from October 1.

The Emirates Media Centre, the news Web site of the airline, which previously announced the development had stated: “Emirates will resume services to Nigeria from October 1, 2024, operating a daily service between Lagos and Dubai, and offering customers more choice and connectivity from Nigeria’s largest city to, and through, Dubai.

It was learnt there were arriving passengers being processed at the old terminal of the MMIA Tuesday afternoon.

Some of the arriving passengers, who related their experience reportedly said that the flight was not full but services onboard were very good.

The arriving passengers are currently using the old terminal while departing passengers will be processed at the new terminal, report stated.

In his remarks on Emirates’ resumption of flight services in Nigeria, Kingsley Nwokoma, President of the Association of Foreign Airlines and Representatives in Nigeria (AFARN), said he was happy Emirates flight has landed after over two years of suspending operations in Nigeria,” BusinessDay report said.

Mr. Festus Keyamo, SAN, Honourable Minister for Aviation and Aerospace Development, who led a high-level Nigerian delegation to the United Arab Emirates Friday, September 27, 2024, was reported to have finalised negotiations prior to the resumption of Emirates Airlines’ flight operations in the country.

The meeting, which took place Friday morning, also set the foundation for a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement (BASA) between both nations to ensure stronger and mutually beneficial aviation ties.
