Speaker Meranda holds inaugural plenary, pledges synergy with stakeholders for ‘Better Lagos’

Rt. Hon. (Mrs.) Mojisola Lasbat Meranda, new Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly (LSHA), has pledged to work harmoniously with Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and other arms of government to ensure the seamless delivery of the dividends of democracy to Lagosians.

ñ reports Speaker Meranda disclosed that her leadership of the Lagos House of Assembly has a core focus on “transparency, inclusion, and good governance” for Lagosians.

The Speaker, who stated this in her remarks during her inaugural plenary session Friday, January 17, 2025, in Lagos, made a profound commitment to collaborative governance with the Lagos State Government.

Her maiden address as the Speaker at the plenary was said to marked the beginning of a new chapter for the Lagos State House of Assembly, setting the tone for a harmonious and effective administration dedicated to the people of Lagos.

Addressing distinguished members of the Assembly, guests, staff, and Lagosians, Rt. Hon. Meranda also expressed her gratitude for the trust placed in her, as she outlined her vision for a unified and effective governance in Lagos State.

The Speaker equally noted that she acknowledging the sacred responsibility bestowed upon the Assembly, as she emphasised the need to work collectively for the betterment of Lagos State.

She asserted: “We are the guardians of the collective trust of Lagosians. Our administration will focus on working together for a better Lagos, ensuring every resident—irrespective of gender, education, religion, or ethnicity—is proud to say, ‘I am a Lagosian.’ ”

Rt. Hon. Meranda stressed the importance of synergy between the Legislative and Executive arms of government.

She further underscored the necessity of open communication and mutual respect to align legislative actions with the state’s developmental vision, led by Governor Sanwo-Olu.

The Speaker stated: “Our legislative actions must align with the executive’s vision for a better Lagos. By fostering a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect, we can leave the stage far better than we met it.”

She equally called for a renewed focus on progress rather than past controversies, urging all members to prioritise service delivery to Lagosians. Speaker Meranda as well outlined her leadership key priorities, including strengthening legislative independence, promoting transparency and accountability in governance, and creating an inclusive democracy where every citizen feels valued and empowered.

“Our oneness is our strength. As leaders, we must lead by example, demonstrating integrity and fairness in all our dealings. We will strive to amplify the voices of our constituents, address their concerns, and protect their welfare,” she said.

Meranda, therefore, urged unity and collective action, pledging to listen to ideas, respond to concerns, and work collaboratively with all stakeholders to overcome challenges.

The Speaker of LSHA averred: “Together, let us work towards a brighter future for Lagos State—a future built on justice, equality, and opportunity for all. This, we will achieve together.”
