In a move to support meat processing value chain in the most hygienic way suitable for human consumption, the Ogun State Government (OGSG) has said it plans to establish ranching facilities to handle the processing of meat in the Gateway State.

Governor (Prince) Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State disclosed this development Monday, February 10, 2025, when playing host to Timothee Witkowski, Head of International Projects of SEMMARIS, and Sonia Darraco, Regional Agriculture Counsellor of the French Embassy, along with her team during a courtesy call in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Abiodun explained the establishment of the ranch facilities would enable the government to rear, fatten, slaughter, and process meat in the most hygienic way suitable for human consumption.

The governor was quoted to have said: “We have an immediate plan to set up ranching facilities here in Ogun State where we will rear cattle, fatten them, slaughter, and process them properly.

“We are also going to do piggery as well. Already, we have a lot of poultry, but we will get them organised.â€

He also revealed though about 9,000 to 10,000 cattle are slaughtered daily at Kara Cattle Market to cater for Lagos markets, these are done haphazardly and not hygienic enough for meat consumers.

Abiodun, in his address during the visit, commended SEMMARIS for its positive impact on agriculture, food distribution, and logistics, lauded the organisation for the Rungis Farmers’ Market for making food available to the people of France at affordable prices.

The arrival of the company in OYIN’ State will be a game changer, as the development will create opportunities for the state and the South-West Nigeria as a whole.

In terms of the suitability of the state for the ranching project, Governor Abiodun further emphasised that the state enjoys a wide range of road networks that extend to all parts of the country.

The state is also blessed with huge limestone deposits and arable land suitable for the cultivation of cocoa, palm oil, and cotton, stated he.

He as well noted that the meeting was a follow-up to the one he recently had in France.

The governor, therefore, appreciated the cordial relationship that exists between Nigeria and France in the area of business and renewed friendship.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, he said, is interested in the outcome of the meeting.

He restated that his administration in Ogun State would support and provide all the incentives needed by the company to establish itself in the state.

Abiodun also said the arrival of the company would assist farmers in the area of extension services and act as an off taker for their produce.

Witkowski: We’re poised to revolutionise agric projects for opportunities, food security

Speaking during the visit, Witkowski, Head of International Projects at SEMMARIS, noted that his mission in the state is to be a strategic partner by working as a team to modernise agricultural projects as well as provide technical services in the state.

He said: “Starting with Ogun State is a good idea because of the potential and the strategic location of the state.

“There is a lot of land available, and the state government has a strong vision for the region.”

He assured that when operational, the agricultural project will provide job opportunities, ensure food security, and improve the agricultural value chain.

Darraco, Regional Agriculture Counsellor of the French Embassy, also commented  said the company is in the state to carry out a feasibility study to identify potential business opportunities for investment.

She assured  Nigerians, that France is ready to support the company in its mission in this regard.
