The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has disputed the report making the rounds in the public space that the organisation has been unable to evacuate “all the power” produced by the electricity Generation Companies (GenCos) in the West African country.

Engr. Sule Ahmed Abdulaziz, Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of TCN, who made the clarification while presenting the company’s progress reports Tuesday, March 4, 2025, in Abuja, FCT, explained that

Nigeria could transmit 8,500 Megawatts to the electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) in the country.

It is recalled that Nigeria Tuesday recorded a “milestone” of 5,801 Megawatts of power production, the highest recorded in history, according to report.

Engr. Abdulaziz affirmed the TCN was able to evacuate all the power to the DisCos.

It was not true that the TCN had been unable to evacuate all the power produced by GenCos, report said.

Meanwhile, the TCN is now upgrading its facilities to transmit 10,000 megawatts by 2027.

The company as well explained that when power transmission fails, it is not a grid collapse but a system disturbance.

Managing Director Ahmed added that only a system disturbance has been recorded this year.

He stated: “Our grid is old, and upgrades are ongoing.”

On 6,003 Megawatts power generation

In a related development, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Honourable Minister for Power, has expressed delight over the historic achievement of 6,003 Megawatts of power generation in the country.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports the Federal Government Sunday, March 2, said the country achieved a record available power generation of 6,003 Megawatts, the highest in Nigeria’s history.

Speaking on the landmark achievement, Adelabu in a statement, explained the recent milestones are the result of concerted efforts by the Nigerian Government in collaboration with key stakeholders in the sector, to address longstanding challenges and optimise the nation’s power infrastructure.

The Minister also attributed the feat attained to rehabilitation and upgrading of transmission and distribution networks as well as tariff review which has ensured liquidity in the sector

Adebayo, therefore, assured Nigerian electricity consumers that the regularisation of tariffs would play a critical role in unlocking the sector’s full potential while driving further improvements in power generation and distribution in the power ecosystem in the West African country.
