NASS approves Tinubu’s proclamation of State of Emergency in Rivers

The Nigerian House of Representatives, in the National Assembly (NASS), Abuja, FCT, has approved President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s recent proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers State, South-South region.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, disclosed this development Thursday, March 20, 2025, via a post in his verified X account.

Onanuga stated the Federal legislators gave an approval for President Tinubu’s proclamation by a voice vote by over 240 members during plenary in the House.

The Presidential aide equally said the Senate had considered President Tinubu’s request for endorsement of the proclamation of the State of Emergency in Rivers, and concurred with the House of Representatives to approve the decision.

He averred: “Senate concurs with House of Reps, and approves President Tinubu’s proclamation of state of emergency in Rivers State.”

Besides,  Senate agreed to establish a mediation committee consisting of eminent Nigerians to help in resolving festering political crisis in the South-South state.

Earlier Wednesday, there was a heated argument in the House of Representatives ahead of the plenary.

Two Rep members, Hon. Blessing Amadi from Rivers State and Hon. Marie Ebikake, had engaged in a shouting match prior to the commencement of House plenary Wednesday.

Following the verbal disagreement, however, the plenary later commenced with Hon. Benjamin Kalu, Deputy Speaker of the House, presiding.

It is recalled that President Tinubu evening Tuesday, March 18 had declared a state of emergency in Rivers State, in a bid to address the protracted political logjam between Governor Siminalayi Fubara and the Rivers State House of Assembly members, even after the Supreme Court’s pronouncement.

In proclaiming the six-month State of Emergency, President Tinubu said the state’s security situation and political tension necessitated his intervention to forestall a total breakdown of law and order.

The Federal Government, subsequently, suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his Deputy, Mrs. Ngozi Odu, and all members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for the six-month period.

President Tinubu Wednesday, as well nominated Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (Rtd.) as the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, South-South Nigeria.

The President Thursday, March 19, swore-in Vice-Admiral Ibas as the Sole Administrator for Rivers State, in the State House, Abuja, FCT.
