Safety: FAAN shuts Ibadan Airport for infrastructure upgrade –Official

The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has disclosed it secured the Federal Government’s approval for a temporary closure of the Ibadan Airport, now known as Samuel Ladoke Akintola Airport (SLAA), Ibadan, in Oyo State, for upgrade works.

Mrs. Obiageli Orah, Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection at FAAN, disclosed this development in a statement issued at the weekend.

The aviation regulatory agency said sequel to the government’s approval, “the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) has closed the Runway and the Airport in line with International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) regulations.â€

Orah also explained FAAN said the upgrade of Ibadan Airport from a domestic to an international airport is part of the Oyo State Government’s initiative.

The agency noted the “various improvements and remodelling works are currently underway.â€

The Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection stated the closure of the airport was imperative to ensure the safety of passengers and airport personnel.

The statement added: “FAAN appeals to all airport users and stakeholders for their understanding and cooperation during this period.”
