As a decisive measure to prevent further cases of examination malpractices and protect the integrity of public examinations, the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has revoked the licences of 574 schools across Nigeria.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports

Dr. Josiah Dangut, Head of Nigeria National Office (HNO), revealed the exam body’s decision at a pre-examination media briefing Thursday, April 17, 2025.

Sanctions against exam malpractices now one for all regulators: HNO

Dangut said as a strict measure to fight against malpractices henceforth, any examination centres found culpable would be sanctioned by other examination bodies in the country.

The Head of National Office also stated: “574 schools are those ones that have got their licences revoked as far as examination centre is concerned.

“So, we will not conduct examinations there.

“We don’t know them as far as conduct of examination is concerned.”

He emphasised “all centres that have been found culpable in examination malpractices and have been sanctioned by a particular examining body, that sanction will be upheld by other examination bodies.

“So, if a school is reported for malpractice and is still recognised, the information will be shared with other examination bodies.”

Dangut: 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools to write CB-WASSCE June 2025

According to him, about 1.9 million candidates will sit the maiden Computer-based West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (CB-WASSCE) for school candidates this year.

The HNO further explained the examination would hold between April 24 and June 20, 2025, while candidates would be examined in 74 subjects across the West African country.

Dangut noted: “A total of 1,973,253 candidates from 23,554 schools have presented candidates for the examination.”

Reeling off statistics for the maiden CB-WASSCE, the Head of Nigeria National Office disclosed the candidacy for 2025 increased by 158,627.

He stated that WAEC made the National Identification Number (NIN) a component of the examination candidate’s registration process in compliance with the Federal Government’s directive.

He also said the results of candidates would be released 45 days after the conduct of the last paper.

However, awarded certificates will be printed and issued to schools in less than 90 days after the release of results, stated Dangut.

From 2025 onwards, he noted, two candidates will not have the same questions on each number.

The HNO emphasised that the variation is geared towards combating recurring and disturbing examination malpractices in the education ecosystem in Nigeria.
