Against the backdrop of current reforms amid the socio-economic challenges affecting several millions of Nigerians, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar again, has taken a swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration.

Atiku, who said this in his latest outburst contained in a statement posted via his verified X account, asserted that the citizens are not just tired, but “are angry, and rightfully so.”

The erstwhile Vice-President and Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2023 General Elections stated that Tinubu’s administration has no achievements to stand on, and no credible record to defend.

His outburst came, following recent mass defections in the political landscape across Nigeria, a report said.

According to him, the current administration’s only strategy is “chaos and division” since its inception May 29, 2023.

He also described the administration’s economic policies and attendant hardship as the “last refuge of the incompetent”

“And make no mistake— an incompetent captain does not only wreck his ship; he endangers the lives of everyone on board,” Atiku noted in the statement.

‘Inflation is choking the masses, jobs are vanishing’

On the state of the nation, Atiku further said the situation is about Nigerians versus an administration that has plunged the country into untold hardship.

The former Vice-President wrote: “The economy is in freefall. Inflation is choking the masses. Jobs are vanishing.

“Youth restiveness is surging to terrifying levels.

“Nigerians are not just tired — they are angry, and rightfully so.”

He averred: “This moment is about collective survival. The real enemy is not one another — it is the Tinubu administration’s abysmal failure.

“We must reject every attempt to distract us with ethnic, regional, or religious sentiments. “These are tools of manipulation, designed to divide and conquer, used by those with nothing else to offer.”

Atiku as well explained that the need for him to speak out on the state of the Nigerian economy resulted from calls from “concerned Nigerians”.

On recent mass defections in the political space

Commenting on the latest defections across party lines to the ruling All Progressives Congress, Atiku said: “I bear no grudges against anyone for exercising their right to political alignment.”

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State and Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, immediate past governor of the state and Atiku’s Vice-Presidential Candidate in the 2023 Election, left the Peoples Democratic Party for the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Likewise, Hon. Busayo Oluwole Oke (BOO), a long-timemember of the House of Representatives, resigned from the PDP and joined the APC on the same day the Delta party leaders moved.

As regards the forthcoming Presidential Election in 2027, the ex-Vice President stated that the results would not be determined by political alliances, but by common goals.

He explained: “Let us be clear: the coming political battle is not APC versus PDP, or LP versus APC.”

He equally lamented how he was reportedly castigated over his recent visits to former President Muhammadu Buhari, in Kaduna State.

He noted: “I have been overwhelmed with inquiries from concerned Nigerians.

All eager to understand my position on the latest political shifts, particularly the defection of some PDP members to the ruling party.”

The Turakin of Adamawa stated: “Let me be unequivocal: freedom of association and expression are not optional in a democracy — they are fundamental rights.

“Alongside these stand the pillars of a just and functional democratic society: the people, the rule of law, credible elections, and accountability.”

Atiku added: “Undermine any of these, and democracy itself begins to crumble.

“As someone who holds fast to these values, I bear no grudges against anyone for exercising their right to political alignment.”
