BHC Nigeria clarifies speculation about new UK visa regulations

The British High Commission (BHC), in Nigeria, has addressed the recent speculation about United Kingdom (UK) visa rules.

The British High Commission Communications Office, in an official statement issued Wednesday, May 7, 2025, said a spokesperson for the BHC in the country has addressed the latest development.

The Spokesperson said: “We keep our immigration system under constant review to allow legal migration and legitimate travel, while deterring those who may seek to abuse it.

“Our UK and Nigeria people to people links are strong and enduring, and we continue to work closely with the Government of Nigeria to tackle irregular migration.â€

The statement also encouraged Nigerians to contact the British High Commission’s Press and Public Affairs team, for further inquiries related to this matter.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports as part of efforts at reforming the UK immigration system, the authorities noted the country soon, could restrict visa applications from nationalities whose citizens are most likely to overstay their approved stays in the .

The UK Home Office has listed the affected countries, such as Pakistan, Nigeria, and Sri Lanka, according to report.

It also noted that nationals from the affected countries overstay their visas and later seek asylum.

It was also gathered that Nigerian travellers have been significantly affected by the UK’s immigration reform plans over the past two years, especially in the areas of student visas, work permits, and visa approvals.

Successful asylum requests allow the applicants to permanently remain in the country.

Consequently, the Home Office said travellers from the listed countries may face tougher restrictions when applying for visas to work or study in the UK.

Home Office: UK building intelligence on profiles of individuals

The UK Home Office spokesperson had said: “Our upcoming Immigration White Paper will set out a comprehensive plan to restore order to our broken immigration system.

“To tackle abuse by foreign nationals who arrive on work and study visas and go on to claim asylum, we are building intelligence on the profile of these individuals to identify them earlier and faster.”

The Home Office stated: “We keep the visa system under constant review and where we detect trends, which may undermine our immigration rules, we will not hesitate to take action.

“Under our plan for change, our upcoming Immigration White Paper will set out a comprehensive plan to restore order to our broken immigration system.â€
