President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Tuesday, May 27, 2025, leaves Abuja, FCT, for Lagos, to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) along with other leaders, says the Presidency.

The ECOWAS golden jubilee was flagged off April this year, in Accra, the Ghanaian capital.

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, May 26, 2025, who disclosed this in a statement Monday, said the Lagos events would include re-enacting the 1975 declaration at the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs (NIIA), on Victoria Island, in Lagos.

The statement noted President Tinubu, who doubles as the Chairman of ECOWAS, would highlight the economic bloc’s milestones at the Eko Hotels and Suites event.

Prof. Bolaji Akinyemi, Chairman of NIIA and former Minister for External Affairs, will review the bloc’s 50-year journey, which panellists at the NIIA will later analyse, Onanuga stated.

The Federal Government also said Gen. Yakubu Gowon (Rtd.), the only surviving Head of State, who signed the ECOWAS declaration, would participate in all the ceremonies and deliver a speech at the Eko Hotels.

The Presidential aide further stated Dr. Omar Touray, President of ECOWAS Commission, would deliver the welcome address on the occasion.

The statement as well indicated President Tinubu Saturday, May 31, while in Lagos, would commission some projects of his administration.

Among them are Section I of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, Lekki Deep Sea Port Tax Credit Concrete Road, the flag-off of Section II of the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway, and the 7th Axial Road.

Besides, the Nigerian leader will virtually commission Kano-Kanwar-Danja-Hadejiya Section II Road and Yakasai-Zalli Road and flag off the Kano Northern By-pass, Zaria-Hunkuyi-Dabai Section I, Dabai-Kafur Malumfashi, and Malumfashi-Dayi-Yashe-Gidan Mutum Daya Section III.

President Tinubu will observe the Eid-el-Kabir prayers at the State House, Dodan Barracks, before returning to Abuja, the statement added.
