The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has emphasised the power of application of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) tools to improve, revolutionise the health sector of the country’s economy.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of NCC, stated this Thursday, May 29, 2025, in his speech delivered at the commissioning of an e-health project at the Ondo State Specialist Hospital, in Akure, the state capital.

Maida noted that the commissioning of the e-health project attested to Nigeria’s collective efforts at harnessing ICTs to enhance healthcare services for the citizens.

The EVC/CEO of the telecoms sector regulatory Commission also said the completion, and subsequent commissioning of the e-health facility was a testament to NCC’s commitment to driving innovation, research, and growth in the emerging Nigeria  Digital Economy.

He further stated: “This is two-pronged: First, ICT can better integrate the health sector into the digital economy to enjoy the ubiquity that other sectors of the economy already benefit from.

“Second, healthy citizens contribute better to the digital economy even as they access care from e-health platforms.”

According to him, this kind of e-health project helps to enhance the quality of medical services while ensuring that services are accessible to all consumers, regardless of their geographical locations, by integrating advanced ICT solutions into healthcare delivery.

Maida assured the stakeholders: “We are hopeful that with its successful take-off, this project will further promote the Commission’s drive to speed up the adoption of ICT in the health sector.”

Stressing the inherent benefits of the project, the NCC Executive Vice-Chairman explained the implementation of e-health solutions would streamline medical processes, enhance patient care, and facilitate the efficient management of health records in hospitals.

“With the State Specialist Hospital, in Akure, now equipped with innovative technology that enables healthcare professionals to deliver timely and accurate diagnoses, treatment plans, and follow-up care, we expect that these will improve patient satisfaction and positive health outcomes.

“This is because the benefits of this project go beyond the hospital walls to the larger community and set a precedent for other healthcare institutions nationwide,” Maida further stated in his address.

Dr. Maida used the occasion of the e-health project commissioning to restate the Commission’s commitment to collaborations and partnerships with relevant stakeholders to advance digital economy in the country.
