Connectivity: Tijani launches USPF Impact Alliance, unveils fibre-to-hostel initiative at UNILAG

The Federal Government has unveiled the Fibre-to-Hostel initiative at the University of Lagos (UNILAG) at Akoka-Yaba, Lagos.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports the Fibre-to-Hostel initiative is a targeted intervention designed to provide fibre-optic Internet access to student hostel accommodations across the Nigeria.

Dr. ’Bosun Tijani, Honourable Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, said by placing robust connectivity at the heart of learning environments, the government is creating the foundation for innovation, collaboration, and global competitiveness among Nigerian youths.

Tijani, who noted this in a post via his verified social media account, wrote: “This initiative is starting with seven Universities in the pilot phase with plans to expand to more.â€

In the course of the past week, the Minister also disclosed that launched the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) Impact Alliance.

The USPF initiative has been described as “a strategic platform that brings public and private sector partners together to drive connectivity initiatives that leave no community behind especially in education.â€

The Minister stated: “I also officially launched the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF) Impact Alliance, a strategic platform that brings public and private sector partners together to drive connectivity initiatives that leave no community behind especially in education.

“It is a critical step in ensuring that access to the internet becomes a universal right, not a privilege.â€

In a related development, Dr. Tijani said he equally activated his Ministry’s Talent Cities Initiative at the Digital Bridge Institute (DBI) Campus, in Oshodi, Lagos.

The Digital Bridge Institute is wholly owned by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

Established 2004 as the training arm of the NCC, the DBI which aims to address digital divide through ICT/digital training initiatives, has been at the forefront of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) education in the West African country.

Dr. Tijani further explained the Talent Cities Initiative at DBI Lagos campus is designed to transform underutilised public infrastructure into world-class digital campuses that would serve as hubs for skill acquisition, innovation, and job creation in the emerging Nigeria Digital Economy.

Highlighting the central objective essence of the initiative, Tijani noted: “Our goal is to ensure that every talented Nigerian, regardless of location, can access the opportunities that exist in the digital economy.

“These initiatives reflect our Ministry’s integrated approach to digital transformation: one that connects people, empowers institutions, and prepares our workforce for the future.â€

The Minister added: “We remain focused on building the infrastructure, ecosystems, and partnerships needed to power Nigeria’s rise as a digital leader on the global stage.â€
