VP Shettima launches National Asset Restoration programme

Nigerian Vice-President Kashim Shettima, GCON, Sunday, June 8, 2025, in Maiduguri, Borno State capital, will formally launch the National Asset Restoration programme.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports the activation of the programme takes off in the North-East with the National Agency for Science and Engineering’s (NASENI) Tractor Recovery Project.

The event, which will take place at the Borno State Agricultural Mechanisation (BOSAMAN) Farm Centre, in Maiduguri, is coming as NASENI’s initiative to boost mechanised agriculture and enhance food security in fulfillment of the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda by reviving broken-down or non-functional tractors.

Olusegun Ayeoyenikan, Director of Information at NASENI, in a statement at the weekend, disclosed the agency fully funded, supervised and executed the project in conjunction its the technical partner, Machine and Equipment Corporation Africa Limited (MECA).

The statement noted the project is aimed at contributing meaningfully to the Federal Government’s recovery and development agenda.

NASENI also said Vice-President Shettima, who is the Eminent Guest of Honour on the occasion, would perform the launch ceremony with support by Governor (Prof.) Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State,

and Mr. Khalil Suleiman Halilu, Executive Vice-Chairman/Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO of NASENI, and other dignitaries.

Statistics have indicated Nigeria has about 55,000 broken-down tractors, whereas only 7,000-10,000 tractors are functional.

The agency explained the National Tractor Restoration Project, under the auspices of the National Asset Restoration Programme, involves “the comprehensive restoration of multiple tractors in Borno and its environs for immediate deployment and to strengthen mechanised farming.”

Each tractor has been comprehensively rehabilitated, including mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and structural upgrades making them ready for immediate deployment across farming communities.

The intervention represents a concrete step in rebuilding livelihoods, strengthening food systems, and revitaliding rural economies through home-grown engineering solutions.
