The Federal Government through the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has inaugurated a state-of-the-art digital Information and Communications Technology (ICT) park to the University of Ibadan (UI), in Ibadan, Oyo State.

绿帽献妻 reports Dr. Aminu Maida, Executive Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer (EVC/CEO) of NCC, in his remarks Tuesday, June 20, 2025, at the inauguration ceremony and official handover to the Management of UI, in Ibadan, stated the Digital Industrial Park (DIP) remains a core component of the broader agenda of the Commission to foster innovation in the West African country’s ecosystem.

Maida disclosed the DIP is one the six flagship digital infrastructure projects of the telecoms sector regulatory Commission, being strategically sited in select institutions to strengthen research capacity in Nigeria.

The ICT Park has features, including a 100-seat main hall, five dedicated ICT hub halls, a 24-seater lounge with eight dual-computer workstations, multiple shared workspaces, and administrative offices.

It is recalled the Commission, in conjunction with the Ogun State Government (OGSG) recently, activated a similar Digital Industrial Park in Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

For robust economic growth and sustainability in the digital ecosystem, the Federal Government June 4 had聽 commissioned a new Digital Industrial Park, established by the Nigerian Communications Commission’s (NCC), in the Gateway State.
Speaking at the project commissioning in Abeokuta, Dr. ‘Bosun Tijani, Honourable Minister for Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy (FMCIDE), said the Innovation Park is significant for the country’s economic growth.

Tijani also affirmed that the new Park and similar DIP projects across Nigeria constitute a vital part of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu鈥檚 Renewed Hope Agenda for the communications sector.

The Minister also noted President Tinubu’s administration has placed digital innovation, youth empowerment and inclusive economic growth at the heart of the West African country’s journey to a $1 trillion economy, agency report also noted.
The Ministry of of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, he stated, is committed to making Nigeria a global leader in digital infrastructure, talent development and innovation.

Parks as launchpad for digital innovation in Nigeria

Highlighting the inherent benefits of the Digital Innovation Parks across the country, Dr. Tijani said the DIPs would serve as a platform for youth empowerment, and place where skills meet opportunities in the digital ecosystem.

He further stated: 鈥淎 launchpad for innovation where ideas become ventures and ventures become industries.
“A catalyst for community transformation, especially for the adjoining neighbourhoods.”

Tijani averred: 鈥淭his can now evolve into one of Africa鈥檚 next great tech clusters. Abeokuta has everything it needs to compete, not just with Lagos, but with Kigali, Accra and Nairobi.

鈥淲hat we need now, is to unlock and connect the dots.”

He equally disclosed that Nigeria is well-committed to building the foundation fibre optics, Artificial Intelligence (AI) frameworks, tech talent pipelines and smart regulation.

Maida highlights significance of DIPs to Nigeria Digital Economy

The EVC/CEO of NCC, represented on the occasion by Engr. Abraham Oshadami, Executive Commissioner, Technical Services of the Commission, also explained the new facility would accelerate development of the emerging Nigeria Digital Economy.

He further stated: 鈥淚n today鈥檚 world, technology stands as one of the most powerful drivers of economic and social transformation.

“For Nigeria鈥檚 evolving economy, it represents our greatest opportunity for inclusive growth.”

Maida said: 鈥淭he ICT Park concept is a manifestation of our vision to cultivate innovation and digital entrepreneurship, while supporting research and development that translates ideas into commercially viable, real-world solutions.

鈥淭his is why our ICT Parks鈥攁ptly named, ‘One Roof, All Possibilities’, are purpose-built as multidisciplinary innovation hubs.”

The NCC Chief further noted: 鈥淓ach park brings together cutting-edge infrastructure under one roof, including high-capacity computer laboratories, simulation rooms, intelligent networking systems, collaborative workspaces, and multipurpose halls.

鈥淭heir establishment aligns directly with the National Digital Economy Policy and Strategy, as well as the Strategic Vision of the Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Dr Bosun Tijani.”

In his address at the event Tuesday, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, affirmed the park apparently stands as a testament to NCC鈥檚 dedication to bridging the digital divide while promoting a knowledge-based economy.

Prof. Adebowale opined that the global world is at present undergoing the Fourth Industrial Revolution, driven by digital technologies.

UI VC: Digital project preparing next generation of leaders, innovators, problem-solvers

The Vice-Chancellor of UI also affirmed that economies that would thrive in current revolution are those that invest strategically in digital infrastructure, nurture digital skills, and foster innovations.

He stated: 鈥淭he University of Ibadan, as Nigeria鈥檚 premier university, recognises its critical role in preparing the next generation of leaders, innovators, and problem-solvers equipped to navigate and shape this digital future.
