The Nigerian network operators have assured

telecoms consumers and the general public that they are currently working with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), and related regulatory authorities to resolve the reported integration issues as quickly as possible.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports the West African country’s Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) currently, are unable to register new Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) cards, provide SIM swapping and replacement services, among other SIM-related services.

This development is attributed to temporary disruptions affecting SIM-related services across all mobile networks in Nigeria.

The Association of Licensed Telecommunications Operators of Nigeria (ALTON) has also announced there would be temporary disruption of SIM-related services across all mobile networks.

Engr. Gbenga Adebayo, Chairman, and Mr. Damian Udeh, Publicity Secretary of ALTON, disclosed this development in a statement Tuesday, July 1, 2025.

Adebayo: Transition to new platform encounters temporary hitches

Adebayo said the disruptions followed a NIMC’s directive to switch to a new identity verification platform.

The Association further stated the migration process has caused unforeseen technical challenges affecting the availability of SIM-oriented services across Nigeria.

The Chairman of ALTON, however, affirmed the regulatory migration process, which directly affects real-time identity verification required for SIM registration, replacement, Mobile Number Portability (MNP), and related services, has encountered unforeseen technical hitches currently affecting service availability nationwide.

The technical challenges may have negatively affected millions of telecoms subscribers in the ecosystem, according to report.

Explaining further the factor responsible for the disruptions in the SIM-related services, Engr. Adebayo said: “While the new platform is intended to enhance the integrity and efficiency of identity management in Nigeria, unfortunately, the transition has temporarily impacted the ability of MNOs to deliver seamless SIM-related services.

“During this period, MNOs will not be able to support SIM Swap, SIM replacement, activation of new subscribers and other SIM-related services.”

ALTON’s statement, however, noted the network operators are currently working with the Nigerian Communications Commission, NIMC, and other relevant authorities to resolve the integration challenges soon.

Apologising to telecoms industry stakeholders over the disruptions in the digital ecosystem, Adebayo stated: “We kindly advise subscribers to postpone visits to service centres for SIM-related transactions until further notice.

“ALTON will continue to provide timely updates as the situation evolves and remains committed to ensuring the delivery of secure, reliable, and high-quality telecommunications services to all Nigerians.â€
