Tinubu, Shettima, family, foreign leaders pay last respect at late Buhari’s burial + Photos

Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Vice-Presidemt Kashim Shettima, London Mayor Khan, President Umaro Sissoco Embaló of Guinea-Bissau and Niger Republic Prime Minister, Ali Lamine Zeine, were among several dignitaries and thousands of other sympathisers who attended the funeral rites for late former President Muhammadu Buhari Tuesday, July 15, 2025, in Daura, Katsina State.

Large crowds lined the streets of Daura and gathered at the former President’s residence to pay their last respects.

Buhari died Sunday, July 13, 2025, at a London clinic, at age 82.

ÂÌñÏ×ÆÞ reports President Tinubu Sunday, July 13 had directed Vice-President Kashim Shettima and Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, Chief of Staff (CoS) to leave for London, in United Kingdom (UK), to accompany the remains of late Buhari to Nigeria.

The Nigerian Air Force flight -FGT 001 conveying Buhari’s coprse Tuesday touched down at the Umaru Musa Yar’adua International Airport at 1.59p.m.

President Tinubu, who had led a high-powered Federal Government delegation, family, friends, and political associates of former President Muhammadu Buhari all gathered in Katsina, the state capital, to pay their last respect to the former Military Head of State and civilian leader.

Earlier, President Tinubu along with Governor Dikko Radda of Katsina State, Malam Nuhu Ribadu, National Security Adviser (NSA), State Governors, and other dignitaries had received the remains of the late President at Katsina Airport.

Amid the mournful atmosphere at the airport, and after a farewell parade in his honour as a former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Buhari’s remains were later conveyed to Daura.

President Tinubu and other dignitaries, including Vice-President Kashim Shettima, President Umaru Sissoco Embalo of Guinea-Bissau, Prime Minister of Niger Republic, Ali Lamine Zeine, former President of Niger Republic, Issoufou Mahamadou, erstwhile Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo, Governors and business leaders, escorted Buhari’s remains on the hour-long drive to Daura, his hometown.

Following the funeral prayer, the corpse was taken to Buhari’s personal residence, where he was buried Tuesday.

Upon arrival, a brief lying-in-state ceremony was held at President Buhari’s residence, followed by the funeral prayer (Salatul Janazah) led by Sheikh Salisu Rabiu, the Imam of the Central Mosque in Daura.

It was gathered Imam Hassan Yusuf, led the funeral prayer over the remains of the former President at the Daura Helipad after 4 p.m.

President Tinubu and the late President’s close family members witnessed the final interment at 5.50 p.m.

Likewise, several dignitaries, notable among them were the former Nigerien President Mahamadou Issoufou and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar also said prayers.

In attendance at the funeral rites in Daura also were members of the National Assembly, (NASS), Emir of Daura, Alhaji Umar Faruk-Umar; Emir of Katsina, Alhaji Abdulmumini Kabir-Usman, and Emirs of Zazzau, Dutse and Kazaure, among others.

Captains of industry, such as Alhaji Aliko Dangote, President/Chief Executive of Dangote Group, and Alhaji Dahiru Barau Mangal also attended the burial, in Buhari’s hometown.

London Mayor commiserates with Buhari’s family, Nigerians

Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London, has made his first official visit to Nigeria and to Africa since assuming office, in the United Kingdom (UK).

Mayor Khan’s maiden official visit to the West African country coincided with the passing of ex-President Buhari, who died in The London Clinic Sunday.

He said the death of former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari was a sad one for the country.

The London Mayor also expressed his condolences to late Buhari’s family, and to Nigeria at large.

Buhari’s burial marked by full Military honours: Presidency

Mr. Bayo Onanuga, Special Adviser to President on Information and Strategy, in a statement Tuesday affirmed state funeral for late Buhari was “marked by full Military honours, including a reveille and a 21-gun salute.”

The Presidential aide stated that a weeklong programme of events for the burial continued later Tuesday with a condolence visit to President Buhari’s family by the Presidential Committee, led by Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF).

In tributes to late Buhari, some people interviewed upheld the virtues of the late former Nigerian President, who “distinguished himself for integrity, honesty and discipline”.

Certain Salisu Lawal, a resident of Daura, described the deceased as a great man who loved staying with his people and offering a helping hand to them.

Aliyu Nasiru, another resident, told Channels TV the death of Buhari was a great loss not only to his immediate family but to the state and the country.

Nasiru stated: “The death has created a vacuum that is difficult to fill. He will continue to be remembered for his good virtues.”

He also prayed to the Almighty Allah to forgive his shortcomings and grant him Al-Jannah Firdaus.
